Jiangkou Sunken Silver Museum: worth a special trip

Searching for "Jiangkou Sunken Silver Museum" or "Zhang Xianzhong's sunken treasure"? This page covers what to see, where it is, how to get here from Chengdu — and how to grab fresh braised food on the way back.

🏛️ What kind of museum is it?

The Jiangkou Sunken Silver Museum stands in Jiangkou Subdistrict, Pengshan District, Meishan City, where the Fu and Nan rivers meet. Completed at the end of 2025 and opened to the public in early 2026, it holds 72,000+ artifacts — every one recovered from the nearby Jiangkou Sunken Silver site — across four exhibition halls. Few museums anywhere display sunken gold and silver on this scale.

🏆 What are the must-see treasures?

The star is the "Shu Shizi Bao" gold seal — the first gold seal of a Ming-dynasty princely heir ever found. Look also for the Prince of Shu's gold treasure, "Xi Wang Shang Gong" gold coins, gold tablets for enfeoffing imperial consorts, and massed Ming-dynasty silver ingots. Even with zero interest in archaeology, the sheer volume of recovered gold and silver is stunning.

📜 What's the story behind the "Sunken Silver"?

In 1646, rebel leader Zhang Xianzhong fled Chengdu with his treasure and was defeated at Jiangkou by Ming-loyalist general Yang Zhan — vast wealth sank into the river. Objects kept surfacing from this stretch of the Min River for centuries; from 2017 to 2020, three seasons of archaeology recovered 50,000+ artifacts, confirming the legend with hard evidence.

⏰ Opening hours and tickets

The museum only opened in early 2026, so hours, ticket policy and reservation rules are set by the museum itself. Before you set out, search "Jiangkou Sunken Silver Museum" in a maps app or check the museum's official WeChat account to confirm that day's hours and whether you need to book — don't risk a wasted trip.

🚗 Getting there

The museum is about 13 km from our shop (~16 minutes by car). Coming from Chengdu, it's on the same route as Huanglongxi Ancient Town — the old town and Jiangkou sit right beside each other, so both fit comfortably into one day. Set your navigation to "Jiangkou Sunken Silver Museum".
